Mourning Beloveth 'A Disease for the Ages'

Melancholic, but not all too sluggish Doom Metal from Ireland reaches us once again with A Disease For The Ages. The compositions are arranged in broad style and combine elegiac guitar melodies, heavy rhythms and borne harmonies. In all the music seems to be very traditional…since the moment the clear voice appears in opening monster track The Sickness. Mentioned vocals are really extravagant and after a short adaptation phase they contribute to the formative characteristics of MOURNING BELOVETH. The harsh growls are dominating as well and sound naturally and not overacted brutally. All ideas get the chance to breathe because of the songs’ lengths; thereby the group tries to capture with grievous chords and impressive melodies and not through catchy refrains or classic hook lines. In addition the voice clings partly brutally, then again suffering, but not whiny.

Consequently the track Trace Decay enthuses with the interesting interplay of nasty growls and Power Metal like vocals, in this case these two counterparts perform a duet. Slowly but not at all cumbersome the moll riffs float by; some understated changes in measure and speed arouse a certain dynamics. Afterwards the artists play music in real sweeping manner during the song Primeval Rush, here the combination of driving elements, intoxicating guitar chords and thundering epic works best. Some trips to Death Metal regions boost the dynamics enormously.

Despite these brownie points I do not get inflamed by the sound of the Irishmen continuously– the melodies are sorrowful but not awe-inspiring, the rhythms can elate me partly, but they do not pull me to the ground… the compositions lack of distinguishable moments like a chord made for eternity staying in my memory for all time. MOURNING BELOVETH’s main goal is not to fascinate with short, intense impressions but they fabricate monolithic, hard to digest works seeming not easy to get into. In case the music finds the devoured way to the auditory canals, it stays in hearts long-ranging. Nocturnalhall.de 7.5
