Mourning Beloveth 'The Sullen Sulcus'

While Ireland may not be the hotbed of doom metal, Mourning Beloveth might be the band to lead the charge to bring this genre to the forefront over there. With a masterful array of ideas and substance, the weight of these doom-ladden tracks is enough to bring down a rampaging rhino. Shades of 90s era doom (Paradise Lost, Penance) can be felt as the band paints a portrait of uncertainty and hurt with their music, brought together nicely by intense death/doomy vocals and the occasional clean vocal passages. Quite effective if you ask me. Another key aspect that makes The Sullen Sulcus such a great listen is the production. The guitars give off a real haunting echo as the riffs are played and the heaviness of the music can be felt with such conviction as each song slowly moves along. Fans of current heavies as Morgion and Novembers Doom take note, this relatively unknown band will surely surprise you with their drive to deliver the doom with such power. It just goes to show that Ireland is not just a happy place to live with rolling green fields and leprechauns --- sorrow is indeed breeding.
