Mourning Beloveth 'The Sullen Sulcus'

8,5

Finally I get the two CD's this Irish band has released: their fantastic first album 'Dust' and this even better 'The Sullen Sulcus'. I bought their demos when I was in their country some years ago, but since then I was not able to find anything else. I think MOURNING BELOVETH are one of the most deep and true Doom Metal bands that exist nowadays. They play pure Doom, just that, without add-ons. no violins, no keyboards, no female vocals. just slow and heavy Doom Metal in the vein of early CATHEDRAL and MY DYING BRIDE but made in their own way. This album has been produced by Mags at the Academy, the same place where PARADISE LOST recorded their masterpiece 'Gothic' to say just one of the well known bands that have recorded their albums there. Having said that I think that you if you are really into the true Doom Metal thing you should at least buy this album. 'The Sullen Sulcus' has the feeling and the sound of a real Doom classic, but as I've said before played in their own way. For example they use two singers with three different kinds of vocals: guttural, whispering and clean ones, playing a lot with the contrast between heaviness and melancholy. Maybe Ireland is not the first country you think of when you speak about extreme music, but be sure there are some good bands there, and MOURNING BELOVETH are one of them.
