Mourning
Beloveth 'The Sullen Sulcus'
Great doom death metal is what these Irish doomsters bring to
you. With this 2nd release they show how much they improved the last few
years compared to their first release Dust. People who bought the re-release
of this album got a taste of The Sullen Sulcus via the song "It Almost
Looked Human". The high quality of this song is a standard for the
other songs on the new album. All the songs are in a high quality level.
Mourning Beloveth`s music is slow tempo with pounding drums and melodic
mournful guitars joined with great grunts that are now and then varied
by clean vocals. If you want to compare them with other bands, I would
say old Anathema or My Dying Bride, but also with a band like Esoteric.
Compared to the Dust album, the clean vocals are used more, but the main
parts are still the death grunts. The band shows their improvement mainly
on the songs themselves. They keep interesting although the average playing
time is more than 10 minutes. Lyrically they improved too. Where the older
songs were more straight to the point, they are now more abstract. Where
their debut had some weak points, there are none on this release. Again
this album was recorded in the Academy Studios with the cooperation from
Mags and sounds really good. The sound is really heavy and clear where
the melodic guitars have just the right touch to give it the emotion this
music needs. I have to conclude that this 6 tracks (still clocking 65
minutes!) containing album contains everything, simply as that. This album
is doom from start till finish and is a MUST have for everyone who likes
this kind of music.
