Mourning Beloveth 'The Sullen Sulcus'

MOURNING BELOVETH consists of five Irishmen, Frank Brennan, guitars/vocals, Darren Moore, vocals, Brian Delaney, guitars, Adrian Butler, bass and Tim Johnson, drums. Having heard their previous release "Dust" I got interested in what may come of this disc. Because who can resist melody, doom and a mix of death and ordinary vocals? Just like the last time around the band offers doom though their early demos with their primitive BLACK SABBATH-feel seem a thing of the past. They've developed their sound until it feels unnecessary to blast at full throttle to create a feeling of doom. Album starter, the twelve-minute "The Words that Crawled" does not feel mega heavy but lasts the distance without repetition anyway. At times the riffs feel a bit similar too but the album as a whole is strong enough to hold for that strain as well. Of course there's still a tad of Tony Iommi & Co present (as with all doom bands) but MOURNING BELOVETH have outgrown the primitive riffing. In comparison both Darren and Frank are good singers so they've left OZZY behind in that aspect. This is very evident in the excellent "The Insolent Caul". There are no apparent fillers on the album but "It Almost Looked Human" was included on "Dust" as a taster and feels like a re-run. Otherwise there's a lot of positive features here as well as good hopes for the future.
