Mourning Beloveth - "Dust" (7 / 10) Just in case you are feeling too cheerful now that the daylight hours are lenghtening,Mourning Beloveth should reduce you to a self-pitying wreck in no time. These Irishmen have gained a great deal of character since their demodays, such that despite its lengthy, lugubrious songs,"Dust" never once seems constipated or monotonous. Essentially, this is ponderous, melodic doom metal with multiple vocal styles and a less-is-more approach to songwriting.Overtones or world-weariness and impassioned misery are conspicious through both the lyrics and the woebegone guitar leads that harmonise pleasingly over the ponderous rhythm section. Apart from one brisk snatch of braggadocio during 'In Mourning My days', the pace is slow without becoming torpid. Some of the growling could be better-it sounds a little insipid on occasion- but with an atmosphere this downbeat that's never the foremost concern. It's the desolate beauty of songs like 'All Hope Is Pleading ' that makes albums like this so captivating. If this jewel doesn't stop you in your tracks, then you really must have a heart of stone.
