From Daheutize

Give us a brief history of the band.

1. Mournful greetings to you sir. Our history is long and boring so here is a quick synopsis. Mourning Beloveth began their miserable existence in '92.In '96 we released our debut , untitled , demo. This is the beginning of our trek of DOOM. In '98 we recorded our second demo "Autumnal Fires" with a slightly bigger budget and a honing of our musical direction. In '01 we released our debut album "Dust" recorded in Academy studios. This recording again sees MB move along the same lines as the demos but with better songwriting , production and depth. The original and only lineup are Darren-vocals , Frank-guitar and vocals , Adrian-bass , tim-drums and Brian-guitar.

Are you happy with the results of your demo "Autumnal Fires"?

2. Of course we are happy with our demo "Autumnal Fires".It captures a moment in each of our lives that can never be replaced. It contains 3 songs of hypnotic , mournful doom with piano interludes. The demo was received well in the ug and we have spread about 1100 copies. We have just released Dust , our debut album , and the response has been amazing so hear's hoping.

What feelings and emotions do you try to convey in your music?

3. The feelings we try to express with our music are the negative emotions which everybody experiences in their lives. We deal with the issues if death ,loneliness and sorrow and the loss of innocence. We write music so we can release these negative emotions so yes it is a form of catharsis. It is the only way we can express ourselves without any restrictions which society may put on us and to free ourselves from this world of shit we live in.

Give us an insight to your lyrics.

4. Our demo "Autumnal Fires " deals with love lost and the loss of innocence and the negative emotions that these experiences bring to our lives. I deal with the lyrics in a worldly sense , as in the use of nature as a driving force behind them and how these emotions are mirrored in the changing of the season , the wild vastness of the sea and the torrid pain of earth. On the album "Dust" lyrics deal with the degradation of the body and mind as time slowly passes , how each breath we take is another breath closer to our death. I also deal with lonliness and how one can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely , and trying to find a way to escape from this loneliness. I also deal with the lack of hope of hope , lack of hope in humanity as a hole but also a lack of hope in this , our miserable existence.

Are you influenced by any other form of artistic expression besides music?

5. I like the poetry of John Keats and Sylvia Plath among others , also the philosopher Jung had some interesting comments on our existence. Another fascination of mine is Shakespeares play full of murder , love and revenge , his poetry is shite but his plays touched me. I really do like reading but I do not get much opportunity these days since the release of the album what with interviews and shit , you bastards (only joking ). The last book I can remember reading is 1984 by George Orwell. I frightening glimpse of a mind controlled future where Big Brother is always watching. I have also read Brave New World by Huxley and a case study of Jeffrey Dalhmer. I like to read books that will fuck your head up and get you thinking of what does and will happen.

Where do you get the inspiraton to write such Doom?

6. The inspiration we get to write music comes from this world of shit we live in and the fact that with each breath we are close to our graves. The musical influences for the music we write are pretty obvious I think as it has been mentioned in every review we have received , MDB , Anathema , Paradise Lost (all early days) but we all listen to a wide range of metal from Iron Maiden , Wasp , Morbid Angel , Thergothon , Iced Earth…the metal list is endless and I am sure it all influences us on some subconscious level. Personally I like Leonard Cohen , Nick Cave , Pink Floyd , Bob Dylan , Neil Young and many more so I have quite an open mind when it comes to music the only stipulations are that it is good and dark.

Do you listen to other types of music outside of metal?

7. Personally I like Leonard Cohen , Nick Cave , Pink Floyd , Bob Dylan , Neil Young and many more so I have quite an open mind when it comes to music the only stipulations are that it is good and dark. I wou;d not like to comment on the other guys tastes but II know Adrian is really into the musical "style" called the 80's.

What releases have touched you of late?

8. The other members will torture me for this but I cannot keep it in , the latest Katatonia album "LFDGD" and Beyond Dawn's "Electric Sulking Machine" have touched my mind as of late. Katatonia for the pure misery and passion they put into their music and also the wall of melancholic sound they create with their guitars. Also on this album for the first time we see the drums take a form of their own. Claustrophobic in a dense and thick sense. Electric Sulking Machine releases the same kind of emotions but in an open and vacuous sense and the vocals are melancholy incarnate. I recently saw both these bands live and a single tear fell with the first note of Katatonia. The last Skepticism album "Aes" was a bold and quite amazing step for them in which for the first time the full and dense sound of the previous releases has been left behind but the same feelings and emotions are their.

Describe your music in words.

9. I could fill this page with adjectives with a description of our music……..but I think that would become boring ,suffice to say it is HEAVY,MELANCHOLIC DOOM METAL. There have been some comments on why we call our music doom metal mainly from purist doom fans , fans of Candlemass , Solitude Aeternus et al and I am a great fan of these bands however I do not think that a band should be banished to a sub genre only due to their vocal approach. For me doom music should be the feeling that the music gives to the listener , the feeling that there are other people out there that think this world is shit and that life is empty and meaningless .Doom is as our guitarist put it "the slow slurping of a bleeding heart" no fake god shit here or fantasy lands just pure , raw emotion put to music. I get sick of reading descriptions of bands such as "doom/death/black/trash" etc. I feel that one should immerse themselves in the music , the lyrics in fact the whole package and we will find that all metal music can be narrowed down into certain genres without going to sub genre after sub genre.

Doom music attracts the few but dedicated listeners.

10. My feelings, I hope, are pretty easy to read from the last question and the fact that I play in a doom band speaks for itself. I think that doom music is for the thoughtful person one who can sit back and enjoy music without thinking of an image to look cool. I do not care if our band ever become commercially viable as we are not in it for the music but to use it as a vent for our negative emotions , that is all .Of course it would be a dream to be able to quit my job and live off the band but I live in the real world and I know this will never happen but who cares? I am in contact with Evoken , Worship and Mournful Congregation and they are keeping the doom flame burning in my heart. A sense of hope appears every time I come across a new doom band worth listening to and the bands above are true doom fanatics and play this type of music for the right reasons.

Where does the future of Doom metal lie?

11. The future of doom metal lies in the bands you have mentioned above and bans like Unholy , Skepticism and many others whom may not be even discovered by anyone except their parents and neighbours. We must create our own scene and not to rely on labels , promoters or anyone to come looking for us WE must do it . I think I have answered this part of the question above. I think doom is for people who are not onto metal because of some trend but because they like metal music, how many Skepticism t-shirts do you see around? For this reason the lyrics tend to be more thought provoking than your average death metal band, for instance.Doom should be listened to in solitary confinement so all senses may be carried away in the emotion of the piece of music being listened to.

What is the state of the Irish scene at the moment?

12. The Irish scene grows healthier by the day and the standard of gigs , recording and bands is increasing. I think this stems from the fact that some years ago Primordial were signed to Cackophonous and then Misantrophy and these days Hammerheart. This showed many Irish metal bands the way in which to conduct themselves at gigs , recording etc and since those early days the professionalism in the Irish scene has moved forward a step. There is still a long way to go but we are getting there. Other Irish bands of note are us , Geasa (Dark metal) , Karnayna (Melodic death) , Mael Mordha (Celtic doom) and many more too numerous to mention. Up until about one year ago the live scene was healthy for these Irish bands with a regular place to play but this venue was then sold and made into a trendy bar. However with the inflix of big name foreign bands and the increased numbers now going to gigs it seems that these new venues are realising that metal is not dead and are beginning to open their doors to us. Thy Sinister Bloom were my favourite doom band for many years but have long since crawled to their death…

What was the response to Autumnal Fires like?

13. The response to our second demo , Autumnal Fires , was amazing .We spread about 1100 copies almost worldwide with only about 3 bad reviews. We have since released our debut , self financed album entitled "Dust" which so far has received rave reviews worldwide and we are also spreading our wings on the global front with sales in Japan and Malaysia . Check out our web page at www.clubi.ie/primordial/beloveth for all the latest news , reviews , photos and much more.

I see you as one of the few hopes for the Doom scene. What do you think of this?

15. That is a nice statement to make about our music. We are not the only hopes for this type of music but one of many. The bands that have tried to evolve and failed miserably break my heart all I can say is WHY???? Look at MDB they moved a step sideways , failed and came back with an album of old but I think a lot of the emotion of the earlier stuff is lost.

How is your new material progressing?

16+17. Since have released "Dust" we have composed 4 new songs for our next recording which is due to take place in October of this year. It will probably be an mcd with 4 songs following along the same lines of heaviness and melody as was with "Dust". These songs are still long , heavy , slow and tortured. The evolution I see in our songs is firstly in the dual vocal attack but also in better song structure and musicianship.

You use Nature a lot in your lyrics .Could you give us some thoughts on this?

18.Nature to me is the driving force behind my lyrics. I use nature as a grand scale for my personal feelings as I can see many similarities between people myself and mother earth. I can just sit back and admire the vast chaos of life mirrored in the sea how life can swallow a person up just as the sea. How the changing of the seasons is mirrored in the passing of ones life and how the rain can beat upon our heads just like the misery we encounter every day in our lives. The only future is death.

Do you play live often?

19. In the beginning our gigs were few and far between as we did not enjoy the experience but in the last year we have played more gigs than ever before and even had a support slot to Cradle of Filth. We have also played support to Cathedral , that was an experience! We do not put on a show although plans are afoot for a stage performance in conjunction with us playing. To experience our music would be to see 5 guys immersed in their own personal thoughts and feelings that they , themselves express in each song. The air becomes thick and dank and the music takes over all the senses.

How often do you rehearse?

20. We rehearse as a band once a week for the last 8 years.

What are your dreams?

21 .We all have dreams of becoming rich and famous and have loads of naked women wash our feet but this will never happen and I don't know many women that would wash our feet!!! Ha ha.

Final words.

22. Bye
